From ANDRAS JONES: BRIAN BENDER is the guy who suggested MYRA FLYNN as a guest for Radio8Ball and for this we will be forever grateful. He’s also a Grammy winning producer and Starburns’ neighbor, which is why I think he’ll be guesting more often on the show, with his big cup of java in hand and the happy eyes of a legal Californian (and I’m not talking about his immigration status). I learned a new term from Brian during this session; virtue signalling. As with many new things I’ve had an evolving reaction. At first, I’ll admit, I was threatened. I didn’t know what it meant but was it a dig at me? I mean, virtue signaling is a big part of my game. I think it is at least. As a straight white guy (who is Jewish) I feel like it’s incumbent upon me to say and do things to signal that my intent is to interrupt patterns of oppression where I can, instead of participating in them. See? Isn’t that some major virtue signaling? Anyway, after getting over worrying about any criticism implied by the term I decided to explore it more deeply. I looked it up and asked people about it. I even asked a question about it on the next episode with Koda Corvette. But I still didn’t get it until this week when a local musician in Olympia posted a lie about me “outing” him as an “anti-semite” on Radio8Ball which led to a bunch of people who hate Israel and love this guy attacking me online. We’ll get into that on a later episode but it’s what this guy did next that helped to fully understand the meaning of virtue signalling. While his lie about me (which by this time he knew to be incorrect) was burning up the internet with folks supporting him and dogging me he posted this:

And now I GET it. When you use general statements of love for community to provide cover for attacking a member of that community that is consistent with their historical oppression, you’re virtue signaling. Thanks Brian. Part of being a great producer is being a great teacher.
