Andras Jones
&
Hermina Jean

From ANDRAS JONES: HERMINA (pronounce er-mean-ah) JEAN rolled into her Pop Oracle session on a wave of soft distortion and hard words. I was in the perfect mood for this. That morning I’d just confirmed my tickets to see Bikini Kill in LA in May and was hoping I could maybe get them to be guests on Radio8Ball that week. It seems unlikely now. In fact, the date I was holding for Bikini Kill I gave to Caroline Keys‘ friend Isaac Opatz, but at the time I was feeling my inner riot grrl something fierce. The Bikini Kill show is the subject of my question for the Pop Oracle, and you’ll hear that in the podcast, but at the moment I’m obsessed with a different synchronicity. Y’see, since this recording Hermina and last week’s guest, Caroline Keys, formed a new band called JUNIOR with their friend Jenny Lynn, and that’s just one of the new bands born out of our sessions in Missoula. In this session I told one of my two Bikini Kill memories. This is the better one….

The last time I saw Kathleen Hannah was at the westside Kinko’s in Olympia in 1995. Maybe ’96. She was there with Carrie Brownstein and someone I didn’t know. As I remember it, we were all making flyers. I was making flyers for my band. They were making flyers looking for a drummer for what would become Sleater-Kinney. I remember being mesmerized by Kathleen’s eyes and I can’t tell if we were flirting or just talking but my heart was racing and I’m pretty sure Carrie was annoyed at me. We were in class together at Evergreen and I felt like everything I did annoyed her. Point is. The beginning of bands. There’s a feeling to band birthing that’s difficult to discern except in retrospect. That fertile funk is all over this episode, and the ones that precede and follow it.

We know nothing.

POP ORACLE Song of The Day (April 7, 2019): BART DAVENPORT “Pamela”

I Know Nothing

I’m holding you up
Up into the dark
I’m holding you up
Up into the dark one finger
pointing up into your heart
One finger pointing up into your
heart
I’m holding you up
Up into the dark
I’m holding you up
Up past the dark
I know you’re gone
I don’t know how far
I know you’re gone, I don’t know
where you are
I know nothing
I know nothing
I know nothing
I know nothing
I’m holding you up up into the
dark I’m holding you up past the
dark
I’m holding you up I hope you’re
still there
I’m holding you up I hope you’re
not scared
I know nothing
I know nothing
I know nothing
I know nothing
