From ANDRAS JONES: ANNA HOSSNIEH & SHEREEN LANI YOUNES of the ETHNICALLY AMBIGUOUS podcast were guests on one of our very first recordings at Starburns. That’s when they were just starting out too. Their podcast has, of course, rocketed to stardom and this is their triumphant return to the realm of The Pop Oracle. I’d been wanting to talk about anti-semitism with them because it seems to me there’s some serious ethnic ambiguity to the topic, evidenced by how hard it is to talk about it with most people. I wasn’t sure hot to broach the subject, but then they did an episode called “We Are On Ilhan Omar’s Side” on February 18th, just days before we recorded, and it felt like a synchronistic invitation to the conversation. All three of us agree that it’s not anti-semitic to criticize Israel, but whenever people want to talk about what isn’t anti-semitism I always want to give a little time to what is. I wrote to Anna & Shereen and asked if this was a conversation they were open to. They were game and I think the conversation was good. A couple of days after the recording they put out an episode called “We Are Anti-Zionism”.
