Mitchell Froom
&
Tracy Bonham

From ANDRAS JONES: I’m impressed by all our guests in some way or another but today’s guest made me gush like a fan-boy. MITCHELL FROOM is the producer of (to list a few) The Del Fuegos, Crowded House, Richard Thompson, Elvis Costello, Los Lobos, Suzanne Vega, Randy Newman and our guest TRACY BONHAM‘s sophomore album “Down Here” with his production partner Tchad Blake (pictured above). During this session we got to discuss Froom’s production process and the record business shenanigans that afflicted his collaboration with Tracy when “the industry” was shifting away 20th century song craft and towards whatever we are in the middle of now.

Froom’s question was inspired by the song “Why Was I Born?”  Words by Oscar Hammerstein II, Music by Jerome Kern for “Sweet Adeline” .

It syncs pretty nicely with the theme of this show. Gestating babies. Mothers. And the cruel world into which we are born.

NAKED

My stubborn skin
Is wearing thin
I beared my soul
You waltzed right in
I gave you everything
And you just made me feel so very
Naked
And I don’t remember
How I let myself
Become so unraveled
I spilled my guts
On your best shoes
You keep it in
I let it loose
It’s only love that makes me
Feel like getting so completely
Naked
And I don’t remember
How I let myself
Become so unraveled
I’m naked
Pretty as a heartache
Waiting for my
Second skin to settle in
Your hardened heart
Can’t hide you now
It loves as much
As you allow
And in the end
The eyeball on me
Will just take you down
And you’ll be
Naked
Nothing, but a heartache
And you know
There’s nothing that can hide you now
You’re naked
Pretty as a heartache
Going out exactly the way you came in
