Nilsson Tribute:
Morty Coyle
&
Chris Price

From ANDRAS JONES: The first time I heard about CHRIS PRICE someone was comparing him to Jon Brion. That’s the kind of praise that can be a curse to those who merely inhabit the trappings of genius without the actual stuff of it. I won’t go too deep into my fondness and appreciation for Mr. Brion here but I will say that one of the things that has most impressed me about him, live as well as in the studio, is his ability to elevate anyone he plays with. I don’t know exactly how he does it but I’ve witnessed it several times. Chris performed a similar feat of levitation for this session, taking advantage of his time waiting around in the studio to form the gathered musicians (Rick Torres, Marshall Thompson, Zak & Kiefo Nilsson) into a little orchestra using nothing more than a bag of toy instruments (some might say “crap”) that was sitting around in the corner of the studio and the willingness of those he could Tom Sawyer into the enterprise. The question from MORTY COYLE of All Day Sucker gets deep really quick, and that’s just how I like it. In the same way Chris used his musical talents to make us an orchestra, Morty used his emotional chops to turn us, briefly, into a men’s healing group.

Everyone in the room has a father. Many of our fathers are gone and those still with us maintain a more tenuous grasp on their own mortal coils every day. Everyone in the room loves Harry Nilsson and feels his loss, and for some of us that loss is greater than can be fathomed by those not named Nilsson. Point being, we all have blood in the game for this reading and if you’re listening maybe you do too.

“Let the wheel of fortune spin”.

THE LOTTERY SONG

You could do the laundry
I’ll come by on Monday
You give me the money
I will buy a ticket
On the local lottery
We could win the lottery
We could go to Vegas
And be very happy
I could be a plumber
We could wait till summer
We could save our money
Have a fine vacation
We could buy a trailer
If we bought a trailer
We could go to Vegas
And be very happy
(“Ooh Loo’s”)If life is just gamble,
Gamble if you want to win
(more “ooh loo’s”)–life can be so easy
Let the wheel of fortune spin)
(Or we could make a record
Sell a lot of copies
We could play Las Vegas
And be very happy)
(“Ooh Loo’s”)–If life is just gamble,
Gamble if you want to win
(more “ooh loo’s”)–life can be so easy
Let the wheel of fortune spin)
