John Trudell was one of the truly great ones. I got to know him when he was a touring poet, after his years as the spokesman for the American Indian Movement in a battle against the U.S. government for sovereignty and dignity that would cost him dearly.
By the time he was a guest on Radio8Ball we’d crossed paths more than a few times, either at events we were both participating in or at mutual friends’ houses. He once borrowed my guitar amp for a show and that Vibrolux never sounded better.
John was always insightful, always a little bit tortured, always amused and always prophetic. He’s all of these in this Pop Oracle reading recorded live in Joshua Tree, California just weeks before Radio8Ball would be removed from KAOS, assuring that this recording never made the airwaves. Until now.
John Trudell left this plane on December 8, 2015. Here are a few words about him from Brian M Frisina aka Raven Redbone who hosts a weekly Indigenous Peoples program on KAOS called ‘Make No Bones About It’.
“It is an honor and blessing to share a few words about John Trudell. Where do you start? Our Uncle/Brother is an amazing beautiful human being. It’s hard for me to put in words how much love and respect I have for him. John was truly a human being. He gifted us his life and love. He gifted humanity clear coherent thought, and as he put it lines to follow. John’s influence was felt by all that understood the original dream. There is so much I can say about John, and when I can I will. He is the greatest mind of our time, and I am grateful that I walked the same earth at the same time. John Trudell’s teachings are in my heart and veins. He continues to teach us ‘how to be a human being’ follow the lines and we will see that when we use our intelligence we can take back our power. I am dedicated to continue to share John’s message. John reminds us always “Power is in our heartbeat”. We all need to work together through our shared responsibility using clear coherent thoughts so we all can heal and return to Creation.
