From ANDRAS JONES: By this point in the episode it’s pretty clear GREAT WILLOW (James Combs & Erin Hawkins) live up to their name. They are indeed “great” and there is a willowy quality to the harmonic spell they weave. If only other bands adhered to this level of truth in advertising we might have a less cognitively dissonant reality, but the sad fact is Yes said “no” to more gigs than they accepted and The Beastie Boys grew up to be seemingly benign men. Did Bob Marley and The Wailers really “wail”? (I’d say they simmered soulfully but “wail”? No). Did The Police ever stop a crime? You see what I’m getting at here. Great Willow are what they claim to be although clearly they are not an actual tree but let’s not quibble too much with their artistic license. It was great spending the hours with them and I hope this episode will continue to deepen with age. Perhaps someday we’ll count its rings.
