28-Prince of Cups

Mr. Jones & The Previous embody the airy aspect of water;
The Prince of Cups,
on this song from their 1993 release
Mr. Jones & The Fascists: In Search of The Hundredth Monkey.

Recorded live in downtown Los Angeles in April of 1992 during the LA riots/uprisings,
this album was conceived as a ritual of peace,
inspired by the Hundredth Monkey protests at The Nevada Nuclear test site
earlier that spring.

When the Rodney King verdict came down and the tape kept rolling,
this is one of the things that transpired.

The Previous at their best, live, in love, and in the studio.

“Child Of Destiny”
Prince of Wands

24-Prince of Wands

2000-07-transfused-art-photos1aLike the Prince of Wands,
Andras Jones explodes in
Child of Destiny
from The Transfused.

The Transfused is
Olympia’s great transgendered punk rock opera.
Created by Nomy Lamm & The Need,
with Emily Stern
in the millennial-mad summer of 2000
in which Time Magazine called Olympia
“the hippest town in the west”.

This visionary almosterpiece
was presented
at The Capitol Theater.

Andras Jones created the role of Ze.

A recruit in the army,
Ze oversees the heroic “Transfused”
for “The Corporation”
in the dystopian future
imagined by this production.

Child of Destiny is Ze’s love song to his commander,
played by Emily “Spider” Stern.

Synchronistically…
Emily Stern took her nickname
“Spider”
from the character Linnea Quigley played
in Andras Jones’ first leading role in
Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama“.

Andy Dick
“Good Luck With That”
The Devil

15-The Devil

The Devil is a very misunderstood card.

He represents masculine procreative energy
and a wicked sense of humor.

Andy Dick is our personal Devil card,
a man whose phallic nature is reflected in his name…
and his life.

This is a song he wrote with Andras Jones about seducing “straight” men in bathrooms.

From Andras Jones:

I met Andy in 1988 through Anthony Rapp with whom I had just worked on the film “Far From Home”. They knew each other from Chicago.

Andy was living in an apartment near the Scientology center in LA with his young wife and child. When they moved back to Chicago he stayed on my couch for months.

I was in the original Circus of Freaks with Anthony, Andy & Dino Stamatopoulos.

One of my proudest moments.

CircusOfFreaks26

Over the years Andy’s has ripped me off,
claimed credit for my work,
publicly insulted me,
and physically abused me.

I still consider him one of my best friends.

Such is The Devil’s talent.

Writing “with” Andy Dick pretty much meant following him around with a guitar
and turning his daily devolution from morning health freak to afternoon wino to nocturnal erotic pac man,
into “writing sessions”.

These sessions yielded songs I would later record at Willie Wisely’s studio in Laurel Canyon.

Andy would come in once the song was done, and sing on these tracks.

At his best, which is rarely, Andy is a comic genius.
I call him the “comic monster”.

He is also one of the most expressive pure rock singers I’ve ever worked with.

Writing with Andy in Hollywood
felt like working with the guy Jim Morrison wished he could get away with being,
in the same neighborhood.

Most of these songs ended up on Andy’s CD “The Darkest Day of The Year
or in his feature film directorial debut “Danny Roane: First Time Director“.

Despite writing the songs, co-producing the tracks, and lining up most of the musicians, I was never credited.

This is what happens when you work for The Devil…

…you get fucked.

If you’re lucky (and I was) you enjoy every minute of it.

Pete Townshend
“Pure & Easy”
The Hierophant

05-Hierophant

05 - pete townshend - studio 1970
Pete Townshend is our Hierophant.

This demo was recorded in 1970 in preparation for the release of The Who’s “Lifehouse” project that became “Who’s Next”.

In 2012 Andras Jones discovered “The Lifehouse Matrix”

05-the-matrix
From Andras Jones’ description on YouTube.

In 1970 The Who were hard at work on the follow-up to their groundbreaking rock opera Tommy. This project, known as Lifehouse, was also a rock opera; about a dystopian future where overwhelming environmental pollution makes normal human life on earth impossible. People live in “experience suits” where they inhabit hundreds of lifetimes on “the grid” without ever leaving their homes. Lifehouse is the story of a programmer’s rebellion that takes the form of a massive interactive rock concert which elevates the world through vibration; leading to the enlightenment of humanity.

Legend has it, the project failed because Pete Townshend didn’t just want to make a record but, in fact, wanted to make the vision of Lifehouse a reality. Toward this end, in the winter of 1971, The Who moved into The Young Vic theater in London for a series of Lifehouse concerts where the band intended to work out and record the new material, with their audience playing a major role in the creation of the piece. During these concerts it became clear that Townshend was so deeply IN the project that he couldn’t see that it had become a toxic fiasco for him and his band. Lifehouse was simply ahead of its time, but just right for ours.

From the 25-plus songs intended for Lifehouse, The Who and producer Glyn Johns created Who’s Next, which many consider to be The Who’s finest album. For years after, songs from Lifehouse would appear on future Who albums (Who By Numbers, Who Are You, Odds & Sods). And Townshend kept the dream alive; tinkering with the concept in very public ways; basing his Psychoderelict CD on Lifehouse and eventually mounting a production of Lifehouse for the BBC in 1999 (the same year as the release of The Wachowski Siblings’ The Matrix).

The idea of syncing the music from Lifehouse with the film The Matrix seems so obvious now that I’m surprised no one has done it before. When you watch it I think you will be entertained, inspired and a maybe even a little bit blown away by how perfectly they mesh.

I used the song list from the Wikipedia entry on Lifehouse with a few exceptions.

1. Wikipedia lists the first song as Townshend’s “Teenage Wasteland” from the BBC production. This dour piano version of “Baba O’Riley” is nice but Lifehouse clearly has to begin with “Baba O’Riley”. This is the only change I made to the running order as suggested by Wikipedia.

2. After the album ends (with “The Song Is Over”) there was still about 15 minutes of film left so I added a live version of The Who’s “Naked Eye” from The Young Vic concerts, Pete Townshend’s demo for the song “Pure And Easy” and “Baba O’Riley (demo)” from Psychoderelict.

Just for fun, I threw in “My Generation” from The Who’s Live At Leeds to run over the credits.

3. In laying these songs out there was approximately 2 seconds of editorial wiggle room so, when a song ended and a new one began there was the potential to intentionally sync the film and the music more perfectly. I tried to avoid doing this whenever possible and to honor the integrity of the album order, allowing these two works of art to sync organically, like lovers that were always destined to meet and merge.

I think you will agree; the effect is astounding.

The Fool

00-Fool

00-Complicated '00-small
From Andras Jones:

I’ve been building Pop Oracles for years.
Most of them a mix of the classics
(according to me)
and the music of my peers.

In crafting this latest Pop Oracle, I realized…
if I want to really put this out there
I have to fill it with music I own (mostly)
or am at least connected to.

So this is my Pop Oracle.
Songs I wrote or recorded or worked on,
and (in rare cases)
songs that define me and this project.

In short, I am your Fool.

The Bay Area Sync Summit with Ira Marlowe & Sync Book Authors

The Bay Area Sync Summit was recorded live at The Monkey House
In Berkeley, California

In the autumn of 2013 Andras Jones presents Radio8Ball as part of The Bay Area Sync Summit at the Monkey House Theater in Berkeley, California with music by Ira Marlowe and sync interpretations from Alan Abbadessa-Green, David Plate, Joe Alexander, Jeremy/Violator and, shadow scholar/author, Victoria Nelson. You can listen to complete coverage of the event HERE.

Grant Lee Phillips & Mary Lynn Rajskub in Brookfield, WI

What the heck were we doing putting on a Radio8Ball Show with Grant Lee Phillips and Celebrity Skype-In Mary Lynn Rajskub at The Majestic, a multiplex cinema in suburban in Wisconsin? Well, we go where the fans want us and we had one VERY enthusiastic fan named Kelly Tanner who wanted us there, and she made it happen. Will Morgan created a Sync film about Mary Lynn for the event. I’m not sure everyone knew what to make of us but I loved hanging in Milwaukee and I had a fun radio interview with Grant Lee. I also got a huge kick out of the fact that, while we were at the theater, they were holding a “Sink Show” in the lobby, with displays of lots of different kitchen and bathroom appliances. Sync show. Sink show. Hilarious!

Music by Andras Jones at The Skylark Cafe & Club In West Seattle, Washington

Andras Jones rarely plays shows anymore
, but when he does, it’s usually for Radio8Ball.

In May of 2011, The Skylark Cafe & Club in West Seattle hosted, what was supposed to be, three nights of Pop Oracling. The first night with Andras Jones performing the music, the second night with The Young Evils and a final night with the return of The Janks. Unfortunately, at the last minute, The Janks couldn’t make it, which was a bummer but the other two shows went very well.

U2 were supposed to be playing in the same neighborhood as Theater Off Jackson that night but Bono broke his back on May 27th, their show at Qwest Field was postponed, and this show made a lot less sense than it would have, had the streets been full of U2 fans. Flora McGill performed great jazz versions of U2’s hits. Eden Sky Skyped in with a question about “natural” time. Ezra Sandzer-Bell offered a Tone Color Alchemy interpretation of U2’s “Vertigo”, and Emmett Montgomery kept us all guessing whether or not he was serious. For the record, he is.

Dan Bern, John C. Reilly & Derek Sheen in Seattle, WA

Dan Bern wrote most of the best songs for the film “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”, which starred John C. Reilly. Having them both on Radio8Ball at Theater Off Jackson is a perfect example of the kind of booking synergy we aspire to on Radio8Ball.

Comedian Derek Sheen wasn’t bad either.

And filmmakers Jake Kotze & Jim Sanders created a mind-blowing sync film, “Hey Zeus”, exploring the synchronicities in John C. Reilly’s films to introduce his arrival.
John C. Reilly’s question for The Pop Oracle was, “Do our dead relatives see us?”

The answer, “Let Me Die With My Trumpet In My Hand”, came from Dan Bern’s backing group, Common Rotation, which was not at all how we would have planned it, but it was a perfect answer nonetheless.

It was great. We filmed it and recorded it but somehow we ended up with none of it. We hope it’s all out there somewhere.
